The yellow taxis of New York City are an icon of the city itself.  If you want to get a taxi, just raise your hand when a taxi approaches you.  But just because you raised your hand, you are not assured that the taxi will stop for you.  Check out the lights on its roof.  On means it is available; off means it is occupied.
