Widely considered the city's most beautiful church, St. Patrick's is also the seat of the Archbishop of New York, Edward M. Egan. The church was begun in 1858 by Archbishop John Hughes to replace the original St. Patrick's Cathedral. After suspension of work during the years of Civil War, John Cardinal McCloskey, the first American Cardinal, resumed work in 1865, opening the doors in May, 1879. Archbishop Michael Corrigan added the towers on the West Front in 1888 and began work on the east addition, including the Lady Chapel in 1901.

Seated across from Rockefeller Center, the gothic- style structure is one of the city's famous architectural sights. The interior of the Cathedral is massiv: it provides approximately 2500 seats, numerous altars and a giant organ with more than 7855 pipes.
Even Popes Paul VI and John Paul II both visited St. Patrick's, and wakes were held here e.g. for Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

Guided tours are available by appointment.
