The Dance Theatre of Harlem is a leading dance institution encompassing a "Classically American" dance company, a leading arts education center, and "Dancing Through Barriers," a national and international education and community outreach program. The educational center offers extensive community, pre- professional, and professional courses in music, dance, costuming and theatre to all who would enter; from pre- school children to senior citizens.

The theater was founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook. Mitchell was inspired to start a school offering children the opportunity to learn about dance and the allied arts. He felt that the creation of such an institution was especially needed in Harlem, the community in which he was born. Since its foundation, the Dance Theatre of Harlem has grown into a multi- cultural dance institution that was considered “one of ballet's most exciting undertakings” (The New York Times, 1971).

As a cultural, social, and educational institution committed to providing young people of diverse backgrounds with an opportunity to receive training in classical ballet and the allied arts, the Dance Theatre of Harlem is enriching for the neighborhood and its residence.

Those interested in auditions should call to speak to a staff member.
