The Big Swim is an annual sports event for children from 6 to 16. Every year in April, more than 1,000 children compete in the 50- meter Olympic standard pool at Manhattan's Asphalt Green. The races are free. Each kid swims a 25- yard lap of the pool. Olympians meet the children at the finish line and award each participant a medal of achievement because everyone is a winner in the Big Swim. Next to the medal, all participants take home a Big Swim t- shirt, swim cap and goody bag, and they have their photo taken with an Olympian.

Award ribbons are given to the top six winners in each age group (6- 7;
8- 9; 10- 11; 12- 16) and the number one winner in each age group get a special prize. The top swimmer in each event will be invited back on the evening of the Big Swim, when they can participate in an AquaShow. The AquaShow is another special event at Asphalt Green with Olympians, lights, music and swimming.
