The New York's Village Halloween Parade was started by a Greenwich Village mask maker and puppeteer. In 1973, Ralph Lee paraded his puppets from house to house for his children and their friends. His little march soon grew bigger, with more participants and a longer route. Today, it is a mega event with around 50,000 participants, and about 2 million spectators. It is a parade of creatively costumed exhibitionists, artists, dancers, musicians, and hundreds of enormous, handmade puppets. Everyone with a costume can join, and it is possible to volunteer to help carry the puppets.

Village Halloween Parade, Inc., a non- profit organization, works year- round planning this event, cooperating with the police, sanitation, fire department, parks and recreation, and cultural affairs to produce a safe, clean parade.

On the 31st of October, the crowds line- up in front of the HERE Arts Center on Sixth Avenue at Spring Street from 6:30- 8pm. The walk itself begins at 7pm and ends around 10:30 pm. The parade runs straight up 6th Avenue, from Spring Street to 21st Street. It is recommended to come a few hours early. The streets are most crowded between Bleeker and 14th Street, public transportation is a must.
