The Metropolitan Opera had its opening in 1883. It was originally housed on Broadway and 39th Street, but moved to its current home at Lincoln Center in 1966.

The Opera, probably one of the most beautiful houses in the world, has a capacity of 3,800 seats plus 195 standing room places. Each season, the Met stages more than two hundred performances which more than 800,000 people attend in the opera house.

The Met has given the American premieres of some of the most important works in the repertory, including Wagner's Ring and Puccini's Turandot.

To foster new talents, the Metropolitan Opera has two major programs. The Lindemann Young Artist Development Program provides intensive preparation for artists who are between the conservatory and professional stages of a career. The second program is the Metropolitan Opera National Council sponsoring annual auditions in 16 regions. Semi- finalists and finalists will compete on the Met stage in a Grand Finals Concert accompanied by the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
