The Joyce Theater was founded in 1982. Housed in an old Art Deco movie house, it has grown into one of the world's greatest modern dance institutions. The Joyce is a 472- seat theater with the infrastructure to serve the needs of small and medium- sized dance companies. Over 200 New York City- based, national and international dance companies have danced on its stage - from Native American ceremonial dance to Maria Benites Teatro Flamenco to the innovative works of Pilobolus to the Martha Graham Dance Company.

The theater is devoted to serve and support the art of dance and choreography. The Joyce Theater Foundation has developed programs that strenghten non- profit dance companies, provide fertile ground for choreographic exploration and develop and educate new audiences for dance by enhancing the public appreciation of dance, music, design, and theater.
