In the 19th century, millions of European immigrants poured into New York Harbor; Manhattan's Lower East Side was the gateway to America. The Lower East Side Tenement Museum gives an insight into early immigrant life in New York.

The living history museum's highlight is the guided tour of an actual tenement inhabited by Lower East Side immigrants. Built in 1863, this structure is the first homestead of urban, working class, immigrant people preserved in the United States.
