El Museo del Barrio, New York's premier Latin American cultural institution, was founded in 1969 by a group of Puerto Rican educators, artists, and community activists in East Harlem's Spanish- speaking El Barrio. It is the only museum in New York City that specializes in representing the diversity of art and culture in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

Since its foundation, El Museo del Barrio has evolved into being a significant stop on Manhattan's Museum Mile on Fifth Avenue, providing positive role models for cultural exchange.
